Valentine's Day is a great opportunity to incorporate fun and new STEM activities into this fun-filled day!
Here are some simple ways to learn about chemistry, engineering and math on Valentine's Day.
Geometry Valentine Cards
You will need:
Cardstock/Construction Paper/Felt
Ruler
Glue/Tape
Create a Valentine's Day card using only straight-edged shapes! Your card should include the following:
-3 parallelograms
-2 triangles
-1 trapezoid
-1 kite
-1 set of parallel lines
-1 set of perpendicular lines
-1 shape that has an area of 24 cm squared
-NO rounded edges.
Heart Engineer Challenge
You will need:
Marshmallows
Toothpicks
Create a 3D heart model using only marshmallows and toothpicks.
To challenge yourself, try to make your model at least 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide.
Chocolate Science Investigation
You will need:
One piece of milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate.
A lamp with a 60-watt bulb.
Investigate how the melting points vary with both types of chocolate. How does the chemical makeup of each type of chocolate affect the melting point?
Valentine's Day Live Class!
Check out our LIVE Valentines Day-themed class which will provide students with a literacy and science investigation on the differences between various kinds of chocolate! Students will investigate the nutritional makeup and ingredients of each type of chocolate as well as the differences in melting points.
Students will be given a reading passage prior to class in order to gain background information on the ingredients and chemical makeup of each type of chocolate. During class, students will work together to examine the nutritional information of each type. Students will then continue by testing the melting point of each type of chocolate and conclude the reason for the differences in melting point! Students will end the class by tasting their chocolate and creating a bar graph on their favorite type!
